Why Regular Soil Fails in Las Vegas

Native Vegas soil is alkaline, compacted clay that holds too much water in some spots and none in others. Bagged soils from Home Depot are blended for the wetter, more acidic East Coast and Midwest, so they fight the local pH instead of working with it. Plants sulk, take forever to establish, and end up needing more water than they should.

Our Desert Impact Soil and its 70/30 sibling are built for Southern Nevada. They balance drainage and retention. The pH is already adjusted to slightly alkaline. Nutrients stay put past the first season. EcoGrow compost mixed in adds the microbial life that Vegas clay is usually missing entirely.

A Real Planting Bed, Being Built Right

Bed excavated, drip lines laid, pale tan-beige desert-amended soil mounded around new golden barrel cactus and a freshly-planted agave. This is the prep that turns a drawing into a yard that actually lives through summer. Good soil is the step nobody posts photos of, but it's the one that determines whether the xeriscape looks great at year three.

If you're converting for an SNWA rebate, the site inspector will check that your plants hit 50% coverage at maturity. That only happens if they establish, and they only establish in real soil.

Where Impact Soil Earns Its Keep

01

New Planting Beds

Create a proper foundation for trees, shrubs, and perennials. Desert Impact Soil is the default for drought-tolerant plants.

02

Vegetable & Herb Gardens

Our 70/30 Premium is what tomato growers and herb beds need. Nutrient-dense, better structure than native Vegas soil.

03

Lawn Renovation

Top-dress or re-grade failing lawns with a soil-and-compost blend. Helps a struggling lawn recover before full conversion.

04

Xeriscape Prep

SNWA rebates require 50% living vegetation at maturity. Quality soil is what makes plants actually establish, and the rebate actually pay out.

05

Container Gardening

Premium soil behaves dramatically better in pots and planters than native soil. Better structure, better retention, less crack-and-dry.

06

Tree Planting

Surround rootballs with amended soil for faster establishment and long-term health. Pair with drip irrigation.

Vegetable Gardens That Actually Produce

The 70/30 Premium blend was designed for Vegas gardeners who want to grow food, not just ornamental plants. 70% desert-amended mineral soil gives structure and drainage; 30% finished compost gives nutrients and microbial life. Tomatoes, peppers, basil, rosemary, leafy greens, and herbs all thrive in it.

Raised beds are the usual play here. A 4×8 bed at 10 inches deep takes about 1 cubic yard (~1.1 tons). Combine with drip irrigation on a timer and shade cloth from July through September. The garden runs itself.

Quality Soil Is Why Rebates Get Approved

SNWA rebates require 50% living vegetation at maturity. Your plants' success depends on the soil they're rooted in. Start the xeriscape with Desert Impact Soil and you'll see better establishment, faster growth, and an inspector who signs off instead of flagging coverage. Skip the soil step and you're fighting uphill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Soil is a mineral-based growing medium: sand, silt, and clay in some ratio. Compost is decomposed organic matter. Plants want both. Soil gives structure. Compost delivers nutrients and water retention. Our 70/30 Premium blend gives you both in one product.
Yes. All Impact soil products are blended for Southern Nevada conditions (slightly alkaline). Off-the-shelf bagged soils from out-of-state tend to be too acidic for Vegas plants. They work against the local water chemistry. Our blends work with it.
Absolutely. The 70/30 Premium blend is a good pick for vegetables. Desert Impact Soil also works well if you amend with an extra 20% EcoGrow compost. Call (702) 597-1010 for vegetable garden sizing.
Most shrubs and perennials want 4-6 inches. Trees want 8-12 inches minimum. Vegetable beds do best with 10-12 inches. Use whatever depth is practical for your space. Deeper is always better for long-term plant health.
Yes. Mix EcoGrow compost with Desert Impact Soil for SNWA rebate projects. Compost improves water retention and plant establishment without compromising drought tolerance. Drought-tolerant plants still need to get established first, and compost is how that happens.
